Hardy Sundberg, Sun-Mar founder, developed an incinerating toilet for cottage use in Sweden. It was good, but not environmentally friendly enough for Hardy, who in 1971 went on to invent the worlds first self-contained composting toilet.
The next big technical breakthrough came in 1979 with the arrival of the first composting toilet with a drum.

This unique design had three isolated chambers, which meant that for the first time the very different conditions required for composting, for evaporation, and for compost finishing could be optimized individually. This breakthough dramatically increased capacity, ease of operation, and the effectiveness of Sun-Mar units.

The first three-chamber composting toilet with a drum is introduced.

Production moves to North America.

The Bio-Drum design proves so successful that the first non-electric unit is introduced.

1989
World First
The Excel becomes the first self-contained composting toilet to pass the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) long term composting tests. Today the Excel remains the only such unit listed to these strict standards.

1991

The first dual vented unit (AC/DC) is introduced for use with a non-continuous 110 Volt power supply.

1994

Sun-Mar awarded US patent for Bio-Drum design.

Sun-Mar introduces the Sun-Mar Mobile, the first self-contained composting toilet for Marine and RV markets.

1997

The first continuous flow composting toilet system is introduced by Sun-Mar. This high capacity unit automatically moves the compost through the unit and into a collection chamber as the drum rotates.
